Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam

Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam

Established in 1883, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam stands as a significant hub for ethnographic exploration. The museum shelters a diverse collection of approximately 1,800 artifacts sourced from an array of cultures spanning Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Americas, and the Islamic legacy.

Within its walls, the museum unveils a tapestry of human narratives encompassing celebrations, grieving, adornment, love, and conflict. Embarking on a global voyage, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam initiates its journey from the 19th century, a period when an awe-inspiring compilation came to fruition through the endeavors of missionaries, sailors, soldiers, and traders from Rotterdam. At its heart, the museum's mission resonates with the aim to unite the denizens of this immensely diverse city, underscoring the shared human essence that transcends disparities.

The assemblage comprises an array of artistic masterpieces and assorted objects representing cultures worldwide. The permanent exhibition showcases a plethora of around two thousand objects. A noteworthy inclusion in this trove is a Buddha statue crafted under the auspices of Thai King Rama V.

Residing within one of Rotterdam's historical treasures, the Wereldmuseum bestows a picturesque panorama of the Maas River. The edifice, inaugurated in 1851 as the Royal Yacht Club of Prince Hendrik, sibling to King Willem III, features an embellished facade adorned with maritime motifs. Architect A. N. Godefroy drew inspiration from Haussmann's iconic Grands Boulevards in Paris, an influence evident in the building's architectural grace.

Why You Should Visit:
The permanent collection is very well presented, including some spectacular temple-interiors from Tibet, Nepal, Japan, etc.
There's also a large temporary exhibition space, a cute gift shop and a very good café.

Tip:
Check out the ballroom and adjoining salon on the 1st level. Welcoming staff are happy to assist and provide more information.
