Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, Jerusalem (must see)
Yad Vashem, translating to "a memorial and a name", serves as a multifaceted tribute to the six million Jews who tragically lost their lives during the Holocaust. Situated on a hillside, the site encompasses an archive, research institute, museum, and a collection of more than 20 poignant monuments.
Entering along the Avenue of the Righteous Among Nations is a solemn experience, with plaques honoring Gentiles who bravely risked their lives to aid Jews during this dark period, including the renowned Oskar Schindler. The avenue leads to the Historical Museum, a striking creation by architect Moshe Safdie, featuring ten exhibition halls carved into the mountain. Inside, over 2,500 personal items donated by survivors provide a chilling firsthand perspective on the horrors inflicted by the Nazis.
Adjacent to the museum stands the Hall of Remembrance, a somber chamber with black basalt slabs bearing the names of 21 main concentration camps. Within this tomb-like space lies a casket containing ashes from the cremation ovens, crowned by an eternal flame. Meanwhile, the Hall of Names within the museum records the names and biographical details of all Jewish victims.
Yad Vashem also houses a museum of Jewish art and a visual center showcasing films related to the Holocaust. Visitors are reminded to dress appropriately, respecting the solemnity of the site.
Tip:
For a comprehensive experience, be sure to grab a map and audio set, available in multiple languages, and take time to explore the outdoor memorials scattered throughout the gardens.

Jerusalem has been around long enough to see empires rise, fall, and try again. This is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, shaped by faith, power, and a long rhythm of destruction followed by rebuilding. Archaeology traces settlement on the site of today's Jerusalem back to the Bronze Age, when it was just a modest Canaanite stronghold.
