Mount Herzl and Herzl Museum, Jerusalem
Mount Herzl (or Har Hertzel in Hebrew), is a prominent hill located north of central Jerusalem, named in honor of Theodor Herzl, widely regarded as the founder of Zionism. The hill serves as a significant cemetery, with Herzl's tomb situated at its summit. At the entrance to the site is the Herzl Museum, a four-room exhibition offering insights into Zionist history and Herzl's life and legacy. It contains various documents, books, and photographs, including Herzl's original study, which was transported from Vienna and reconstructed on-site. This study is where Herzl penned his influential Zionist treatise, "Altneuland" ("Old-New Land").
While the concept of a Jewish state in Palestine predates Herzl and was initially termed Zionism by Nathan Birnbaum in 1890, it was Herzl's seminal work, "Der Judenstaat" ("The Jewish State"), published in 1896, that galvanized the Zionist movement. In response to widespread criticism from the non-Jewish East European press, Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, laying the foundation for the Zionist movement.
The surrounding park is also the final resting place of several other prominent Israeli and Zionist leaders, including three Israeli Prime Ministers: Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir, and Yitzhak Rabin. Additionally, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the founder of Zionism's right-wing "Revisionist" faction, is buried here. Jabotinsky's wish to be buried in Palestine was fulfilled by Levi Eshkol in 1964, following the establishment of the State of Israel.
All in all, a convenient pause en route to the Yad Vashem complex.
