6th Street Lounge, Camden
6th Street Lounge is a small neighbourhood bar with a local history that reaches beyond its current name. Before it became a bar in the late 1930s, the building was home to the Dease family from roughly 1926 to 1932. Known locally as painters, they add an earlier “maker” layer to the site, before it shifted from a domestic and craft-related space into a social one. By 1938, the location had a liquor licence, and by 1940 it was operating as The Tavern.
For more than six decades, The Tavern served nearby residents, workers, and students. It became especially familiar to generations of Rutgers University-Camden students, functioning almost like a temporary local during their time in the area. This gave the bar an unusual role as a meeting point between the city’s industrial workforce and its academic community, two groups that shaped the neighbourhood in different but connected ways.
The lounge reopened under its present name in 2003 after remodelling, continuing the building’s long association with informal gathering. For tourists, its appeal lies in everyday urban culture rather than grand architecture. The lounge reflects several layers of local memory, from family life and craft work to student routines, working-class sociability, and present-day nightlife.
