Anraku-ji Temple, Kyoto

Anraku-ji, nestled just south of Honen-in along the tranquil Philosopher's Walk in eastern Kyoto's Higashiyama area, remains a hidden gem, often overlooked by visitors. Its allure peaks during the autumn foliage season, when the stone steps leading to its thatched gates are lined on both sides with vibrant red maple leaves; however, its charm transcends seasons, boasting beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and blooming azaleas shortly after.

Founded in the 13th century by two devotees of the Jodo-shu sect, Anraku and Juren, along with two Imperial Palace court ladies turned nuns, the temple's history is tinged with intrigue. The duo's fate took a tragic turn when ex-Emperor Gotoba ordered their execution due to the court ladies' association with the new sect. By the mid-16th century, Anraku-ji was erected in honor of its ill-fated founders as Jodo-shu gained prominence in Japanese society.

At the heart of Anraku-ji lies its Main Hall (Hondo), housing the main image of Amida-Nyorai (Amitabha). The surrounding grounds exude serenity, adorned with moss, manicured hedges, stone Buddhas, and smaller temple structures. Notably, the octagonal pagoda dating back to the Kamakura period stands as a rare example of Chinese Song Dynasty architecture in Japan, featuring intricate details with its three false roofs and eight bowed sections, creating the illusion of four floors.
