Basilica of Mary, Queen of the Universe, Orlando

The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, situated in Orlando on Vineland Avenue, serves the considerable Catholic tourist population in the Greater Orlando area. This 2,000-seat church, part of the Diocese of Orlando, not only offers Mass but has also become a popular regional attraction. In 2009, it gained recognition as the 63rd minor basilica in the U.S. However, it's not a regular parish; thus, it only celebrates the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist.

The construction of the shrine involved numerous craftsmen and artists who contributed to its furnishings and sacred art. The shrine features works by artists like Jill Burkee, Giancarlo Biagi, Jerzy Kenar, Bruno Lucchesi, and Loura Parks Dobbs, as well as contributions from the Judson Studios, Domus Dei Studios, Kenneth VonRoenn, Laura M. Llerena, among others.

The complex includes the main church, the Rosary Garden, the Mother & Child Outdoor Chapel, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the Shrine Museum, and a gift shop.

Today, the shrine remains a place of inspiration for those seeking to worship, pray, or find peace through liturgy, sacred art, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It offers a haven of spiritual renewal for people worldwide, including local residents, amidst the bustling external environment.

Tip:
The weekend masses are very nice, with some outstanding music (much of the choir works at Disney), and if they have a concert while you are in town it is not to be missed.
