Beethovenstraat, Amsterdam

Today, Beethovenstraat stands as one of the most highly sought-after locations in Amsterdam. This elegant street, situated in South Amsterdam, extends from Apollo Avenue ("Apollolaan") to Buitenveldert. Visitors who venture here in search of designer clothing, unique gifts, or gourmet delights rarely leave without making a purchase.

The development of the Nieuw Zuid (New South) district did not immediately win favor with the Dutch bourgeoisie. In fact, during the late 1930s, the area evolved into something of a Jewish enclave. For instance, the family of Anne Frank resided on Merwedeplein, just off Churchilllaan, for a period. This budding community faced tragic displacement during the German occupation, and their experiences were recounted in Grete Weil's novel "Last Trolley from Beethovenstraat."

A poignant reminder of those dark times can be found at the intersection of Apollolaan and Beethovenstraat. Here, a monument, erected in 1954, commemorates the execution of 29 Resistance fighters in 1944 as a reprisal for the killing of a German security officer. This striking memorial portrays three resolute individuals with somber expressions, serving as a lasting tribute to the victims.
