Sarmiento Park, Cordoba

Sarmiento Park is the largest landscaped green space in the area and one of its oldest public parks. Designed by Carlos Thays in the late 19th century, the park follows Belle Époque ideas, with curved paths, wooded areas, terraces, fountains, and a lake. Its creation also encouraged nearby grand residences, including the mansion now used as the Evita Fine Arts Museum.

The park is useful for walking, resting, cycling, or spending time outdoors between nearby cultural visits. Its broad lawns are popular with students who gather to drink mate, study, or meet friends. The 1918 swimming pavilion also has a curious story: after restoration, Mayor Daniel Giacomino reopened it in 2008 by entering the pool fully dressed to prove the water was clean.

Several structures give the park a varied visual character. The Rueda Eiffel, a restored wrought-iron Ferris wheel linked to Eiffel’s workshops, no longer carries passengers but may rotate briefly with lights. Nearby, the 2011 Bicentennial Lighthouse adds a modern contrast to the park’s older design. Monuments, stairways, the biodiversity park, and nearby museums give the area layers of nature, memory, and architecture.
