Parque de la Biodiversidad (Cordoba Zoo), Cordoba

Cordoba Zoo, now known as the Parque de la Biodiversidad, began as a zoological garden in 1915 and carries more than a century of local urban history. Its 17-hectare grounds follow the park’s natural ravines and reflect French-Argentine landscape ideas from the turn of the 20th century. Older paths, slopes, walls, and structures still recall the Belle Époque view of zoos as places for leisure, science, and civic pride.

Today, the site has moved away from the traditional zoo model. Many animals still live there, but some are no longer shown to the public. Their areas have been screened with vegetation or partitions to reduce stress and allow them to spend their remaining years with less human disturbance. The park also works as a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, receiving animals rescued from illegal trafficking, circuses, or private homes where they had been kept as illegal pets.

The landscape has changed as well. Exotic ornamental planting has gradually given way to native Argentine flora, including species connected with Espinal and Chaco environments. Native plants now help explain local ecosystems and reflect the move away from exotic animal display. The park is also quieter, with fewer loud sounds and commercial features to reduce stress on animals. An environmental mailbox invites visitors to leave messages or promises about caring for nature.
