Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Tijuana

Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Tijuana

Now formally associated with devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe, this historic church is one of the oldest Catholic landmarks in the city’s historic centre. Its origins go back to 1902, when a small wooden chapel was brought from the United States for the local Catholic community. For roughly three decades, it was the area’s only Catholic temple, serving as the setting for baptisms, weddings, funerals, and major religious gatherings as the border settlement grew.

The current building largely reflects reconstruction carried out between 1949 and 1956, when the older chapel became a more formal Catholic sanctuary. Its white façade, twin towers, central clock, curved lines, and arched openings show California Mission influence with some neoclassical touches, linking the church to the missionary history of Baja California.

Inside, the church remains centred on devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, with religious images, stained glass, statues, and an active altar. On December 12, 1970, the central image of the Virgin was canonically crowned, strengthening its role as a pilgrimage site. Although a new cathedral complex is under development elsewhere, many still call this historic church the Cathedral or the Old Cathedral.
