Central Ohio Fire Museum, Columbus

Central Ohio Fire Museum, Columbus

The Central Ohio Fire Museum is located inside the former Engine House No. 16, a fire station built in 1908. Designed by architect A.C. Burley, the building was one of several constructed in a similar style and was the last in the city built to accommodate horse-drawn fire engines before motorized equipment became standard. After decades of service and multiple remodels to fit changing technology, the station closed in 1982.

That same year, a group of local firefighters formed a nonprofit to preserve firefighting history and eventually leased the property from the city. Restoration efforts, including rebuilding the third story, hose tower, and facade, led to the museum's public opening in 2002. The structure is listed on both the Columbus Register of Historic Properties and the National Register of Historic Places.

Inside, the museum features a range of historical fire apparatus-hand-drawn, horse-drawn, and motorized-offering insight into the evolution of firefighting equipment and life in the station. In addition to its preservation role, the museum functions as a fire safety education centre, especially for young children. Interactive exhibits include a 9-1-1 simulator, a "Safety Kitchen" displaying common household hazards, and a “Safe Bedroom” where children practice escaping during a simulated fire event.

Further displays compare a firefighter's search-and-rescue efforts in a smoke-filled room with the aftermath of a fire-damaged bedroom. Younger visitors can explore a play area with hands-on activities like sliding down a fire pole, trying on gear, and operating a real fire hose.
