Cervejaria Trindade (Trindade Brewery), Lisbon

Cervejaria Trindade (Trindade Brewery), Lisbon

Trindade Brewery is one of Lisbon’s most atmospheric historic restaurants, a place where centuries of religious, social, and culinary history meet under the same vaulted roof. The building dates back to the 13th century, when it formed part of the monastery of the Trinos Friars and served as their refectory. After Portugal dissolved its monasteries in 1834, the former dining hall entered a very different chapter. In 1836, Spanish businessman Manuel Garcia transformed it into Lisbon’s first commercial beer hall, complete with an on-site brewery. Turning a monastic space into a lively setting for beer, food, and conversation was a bold idea, but it gave the building a new life that continues today.

Inside, Trindade’s character is difficult to mistake. The old monastery vaults still shape the space, while large blue-and-white azulejo panels cover the walls with decorative scenes rooted in Portuguese tradition. A patio garden adds another layer to the experience, offering a quieter open-air setting beyond the historic interior.

The menu focuses on traditional Portuguese cooking, with seafood, meat dishes, house-brewed beer, regional wines, and classic desserts such as flans and puddings. Recognized as a Cultural Heritage site of Lisbon, Cervejaria Trindade is more than a restaurant with a long past. It is a living piece of the city’s dining culture, where visitors can enjoy a meal in a setting shaped by nearly 800 years of history.
