Chiesa di San Pietro alla Magione (Saint Peter of the Mansion Church), Siena

The Church of Saint Peter of the Mansion is one of Siena’s oldest religious buildings and a rare surviving reminder of the Crusades and the medieval pilgrimage routes that passed through the city. The church is documented as early as 998, when Counts Bernard and Gualfredi Ranieri donated land for the construction of a church and the planting of vineyards.

Its position near the northern gate made it an important stopping place for pilgrims and crusaders traveling toward Rome and the Holy Land. During the 12th century, the Knights Templar took control of the complex and converted it into a hospice or hospital for travelers. After the suppression of the Templar Order in 1312, the property passed to the Knights Hospitaller, whose presence left further traces in the church’s decoration.

Architecturally, Saint Peter of the Mansion is a simple rectangular Romanesque building with a single nave, a semicircular apse, and an exposed wooden roof. Its austere bell tower resembles those associated with Templar churches from the Crusader period. Stone crosses linked to the Templars can still be seen both outside and inside the church.

The interior preserves medieval frescoes traditionally associated with the Knights Hospitaller, illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Although modest compared with Siena’s larger churches, Saint Peter of the Mansion offers visitors an evocative glimpse into the city’s role as a center of pilgrimage, military orders, and charitable hospitality during the Middle Ages.
