Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro in Zebedia (Church of St. Alexander in Zebedia), Milan

The Catholic church of Saint Alexander in the historic center of Milan is said to be where Saint Alexander, the martyr, was held prisoner (the name "Zebedia" signifies the prison where he was held). The initial architect was one of the Barnabite fathers, and the church's central floor plan was one of the last experiments on this type of layout. Its models come from Bramante's project for Saint Peter's and other authors, including Alessi, who was active in Milan after his work in Genoa.

The church stands as one of the earliest examples of Milanese Baroque and was completed by Richino in 1658. Located in the square of the same name, it features a facade decorated with bas-reliefs and flanked by two bell towers. The lower part of the facade dates back to before 1620, while the upper crown was created in the early 18th century in the style of Lombard barocchetto. The church's structure with two bell towers is considered one of the most illustrious precedents of the famous Borrominian facade of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
