Church Hospital (Site of Poe’s Death), Baltimore

Church Hospital (Site of Poe’s Death), Baltimore

The Church Home and Hospital marks the site tied to the final days of Edgar Allan Poe. In October 1849, Poe was found semiconscious on the streets of Baltimore and taken to what was then Washington College Hospital. Under the care of Dr. John J. Moran, he died on October 7, leaving behind a mystery that has never been fully resolved.

The institution itself dates to 1833, when it operated in connection with Washington Medical College before later being acquired by the Protestant Episcopal Church and converted into a hospital and long-term care facility. Over time, the complex evolved with the city, continuing in use until around 2000. In 2005, the site was redeveloped into a residential complex now known as Broadway Overlook.

Although the original hospital interiors no longer survive in their 19th-century form, the site retains clear markers of its past. A bronze plaque in the building’s lobby references Poe’s death, while another indicates the reported location of the room where he spent his final hours. The exact spot, however, remains debated among historians.

For visitors following Poe’s footsteps through Baltimore, this location offers a moment of reflection rather than a traditional museum experience. The contrast between the present-day residential setting and the events of 1849 highlights how much has changed, while the unanswered questions surrounding Poe’s death continue to echo the dark, unresolved themes found in his work.
