Little Italy and St. Leo Roman Catholic Church, Baltimore

Little Italy and St. Leo Roman Catholic Church, Baltimore

Little Italy is a neighborhood in southeastern Baltimore that is known for its rich Italian-American heritage and identity. It is a closely knit ethnic enclave that is still predominantly populated by the descendants of Italian-American immigrants. The neighborhood is located just east of the Inner Harbor and was named after the large number of Italian immigrant families that moved into the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Each summer, the Little Italy community hosts an outdoor film festival where outdoor movies are projected onto a wall at the intersection of High and Stiles Streets.

One of the most notable landmarks in Little Italy is the Saint Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church. Established in 1881, with the cornerstone laid the previous year, this historic church has played a central role in the largely Catholic neighborhood since its inception. The church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered to be one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in the area.

Saint Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church has always been an important gathering place for the local residents of Little Italy. It is still frequented by Italian-Americans from all over Baltimore, who have family roots in the neighborhood. The church has a strong connection to the Italian-American community and is known for its beautiful architecture, stunning stained-glass windows, and ornate interior.
