City Hall, Singapore
The Former City Hall building in Singapore holds the status of a National Monument, a designation granted on February 14, 1992. It stands prominently in front of the historic Padang and is situated next to the Former Supreme Court of Singapore. This architectural gem was conceived and constructed by A. Gordans and F. D. Meadows, architects associated with the Singapore Municipal Commission. The construction period spanned from 1926 to 1929. A grand staircase leads visitors from the Corinthian colonnade to the main building.
This structure was erected to replace several houses designed by architect G.D. Coleman and was initially known as the Municipal Building. In 1951, it was renamed City Hall when Singapore was granted city status by King George VI.
In 1987, the building underwent a substantial renovation to accommodate governmental offices. In 1988, twelve courtrooms from City Hall were relocated to the Supreme Court. This extensive restoration work was recognized with a Good Effort Award in 1994 from the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Notably, City Hall served as the venue for Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's inauguration ceremony and the swearing-in of his cabinet in 1990. Over the years, it hosted numerous government events, including serving as a venue for the Singapore Biennale and the IMF and World Bank Meetings in 2006 when they were held in Singapore.
In 2015, the former City Hall, along with the adjacent Former Supreme Court Building, was transformed into the National Gallery Singapore.
