Clock Tower, Suva
The Clock Tower in Suva stands as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, located alongside Albert Park within the historic Government Buildings precinct. Its construction, completed in 1905, was dedicated to the memory of King Edward VII, symbolizing Fiji's colonial ties and governance. The Clock Tower, with its distinctive dome adorned in glazed tiles, became a centerpiece of the art deco design introduced during the expansion of the Government Buildings in 1939.
Originally, the Government Buildings precinct in Suva consisted of wooden structures relocated from Levuka. Over time, this area evolved to house the Parliament of Fiji, law courts, and several government ministries. Officially inaugurated in May 1939 by Governor Sir Harry Luke, the buildings served as the seat of Fiji's colonial administration and Legislative Council. After Fiji gained independence in 1970, the Legislative Council transitioned into the Parliament of Fiji, which continued to operate from this site until the political upheavals of 1987.
The Clock Tower itself underwent significant restoration in 2013 under the leadership of Chief Justice Anthony Gates. The clock mechanism, originally assembled by the Cumbria Clock Company, remains a testament to the craftsmanship of the era. Today, the Clock Tower continues to be a symbol of Suva’s historical and political heritage, embodying the architectural and cultural transitions that have shaped Fiji's capital city.
