Donaupark, Vienna

Donaupark, Vienna

Donaupark is a shining example of what a city can do rejuvenate an area and turn a tragic place into a place of joy. This park covers around 200 acres of land that used to be home to the city trash dump. Prior to that time, this area was used by the Nazis as an execution site during the period from the 1930s through the 1940s.

In the 1960s the city decided to clean up the area and turn it into a green zone. The park now has something for almost everyone. A miniature train runs around the perimeter, a skate park is there for the skater crowd, concerts are held here, and a great game of tennis can all be enjoyed on the grounds. It is a great place to have a picnic lunch, take a stroll or read a book on a warm day. If traveling with kids, this is a great place to let them run off some energy before seeing another building full of “don’t touch” items. The Donautürm is also located here, and the view from the top is incredible.

There is plenty of parking available as well as public transportation. With its location on the Danube, this park can become crowded on weekends and holidays, so go early during these times, or visit during the weekday.
