Mischek Tower (Mischek Turm), Vienna

Mischek Tower, designed by Delugan Meissl, was constructed between 1996 and 2000. It stands as the tallest apartment building in Austria, boasting 35 floors and a height of 110 meters.

The tower was envisioned as a key feature of the urban Wohnpark Donau City concept and, at the time, held the title of Austria's tallest residential building. This urban area is densely developed, taking into account short walking distances for pedestrians and offering convenient access to underground transportation and parking facilities. Nearby attractions include UN City, Austria Centre, Donaupark, and Neue Donau, all seamlessly integrated into the urbanized landscape.

One noteworthy aspect of this skyscraper is that it doesn't stand alone but emerges from a stepped residential structure. This design choice was made to accentuate the site's edge, following urban planning guidelines.

The building's construction consists of both horizontal and vertical units, along with an interior staircase that remains hidden from external view, creating a central space resembling two hands intertwined. The facade design aims to create two distinct layers.

The space between these layers, which can serve as an extension of the living area, attempts to diminish the building's bulkiness. As a result, individual apartments become visible units when approaching the facade. The outer shell of the building combines transparent and solid elements, which can be closed off with glass as per the residents' preferences, while still maintaining its urban character, whether fully or partially enclosed.
