Narodni muzej Slovenije (National Museum of Slovenia), Ljubljana

Narodni muzej Slovenije (National Museum of Slovenia) is the country’s oldest museum institution, founded on 15 October 1821 as the Carniolan Provincial Museum. Its Neo-Renaissance building was constructed between 1883 and 1885 and opened to the public in 1888. Designed by Wilhelm Rezori and Viljem Treo, the building is shared with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. An 1885 fresco by Janez and Jurij Šubic decorates the main staircase.

Highlights include the 60,000-year-old Divje Babe Neanderthal flute and the 5th-century BC Vače Situla, decorated with scenes of processions, feasts, and contests. The museum preserves Slovenia’s only Egyptian mummy and anthropomorphic coffin, donated in 1846 and identified as the priest Isahta.

More than 200 Roman stone monuments form the museum's ground-floor lapidarium, including inscriptions mentioning emperors such as Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus. Collections include coins, weapons, jewellery, manuscripts, clocks, glassware, and Roman finds. The Ethnographic Museum developed from its collections, while the National Gallery later incorporated related artworks.
