Evangelicanska cerkev (Evangelical Church), Ljubljana

Evangelicanska cerkev, officially known as the Evangelical Church of Primož Trubar, is the only active church of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in the area. The congregation was founded in 1850, largely by German-speaking merchants, soldiers, and officials. Designed by Gustav Lahn, the Neo-Romanesque church was completed in 1851 and consecrated in January 1852.

The building has a smooth, pale façade, rounded arches, and a single side bell tower. It was damaged in the 1895 earthquake and later restored and enlarged. The present tower, designed by Adolf Wagner, was completed in 1897 and originally contained three bells. These were requisitioned in 1916 and melted down for military use during the First World War. Inside, an 1852 oil painting by Pavel Künl shows Jesus speaking with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. An organ made by France Goršič in 1888 is also preserved.

The church reflects the revival of Protestant worship after the Counter-Reformation had suppressed Evangelical communities for almost two centuries. Services are mainly held in Slovene, with occasional worship in German or English. Nearby, the Park of the Slovenian Reformation contains a monument honouring Primož Trubar, Bible translator Jurij Dalmatin, grammarian Adam Bohorič, and writer Sebastijan Krelj, whose work helped shape written Slovene.
