Narodna galerija (National Gallery of Slovenia), Ljubljana

Narodna galerija (National Gallery of Slovenia) is the country’s principal museum of historic art, with collections spanning the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Founded in 1918, it occupies the Narodni dom, a Neo-Renaissance building completed in 1896 as a centre for Slovenian cultural and social life. A modern glass extension connects the historic exhibition spaces and houses one of the gallery’s most important monuments.

The permanent collection includes medieval religious sculptures, Baroque paintings, Neoclassical works, Realism, and Slovenian Impressionism. Visitors can see works by Ivana Kobilca, Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar, Matija Jama, and Matej Sternen. Kobilca’s Kofetarica, painted in 1888 and showing a woman drinking coffee, is among the best-known works in Slovenian art. The collection also contains works by European artists who influenced artistic development in the region.

The glass entrance hall displays the original Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, created by Francesco Robba in the 18th century. Its three marble figures are traditionally associated with the Sava, Krka, and Ljubljanica rivers. The fountain was moved indoors in 2008 to protect its marble. Families can also follow Gal the Dwarf, the gallery’s mascot, through child-friendly activities.
