Pravoslavna cerkev (Orthodox Church), Ljubljana

Pravoslavna cerkev, officially the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, is the main Serbian Orthodox church in Slovenia. Built for the growing Serbian Orthodox community, the church was supported by King Alexander I and begun after Patriarch Varnava blessed its foundations in 1932. Momir Korunović designed its Byzantine Revival form with five domes and medieval Serbian influences.

The interior contains a hand-carved iconostasis made by craftsmen from the Macedonian Debar school. Its icons were painted in 1940 by Slovenian artist Mirko Šubic. Extensive frescoes created by Serbian artists were added between 1986 and 1997, covering the walls and domes with biblical scenes and figures of saints. The church also preserves relics of Saint Athanasius the Great, brought from the Vatican by Cardinal Tomáš Špidlík.

Although the building opened in 1936, the Second World War and the post-war Communist period delayed its formal consecration for nearly seventy years. Serbian Patriarch Pavle presided over the ceremony in October 2005, when the relics were installed. The church received protected cultural-monument status in 2010, while the neighbouring Serbian Cultural and Pastoral Centre, completed in 2012, supports religious, educational, and community activities.
