Neboticnik (The Skyscraper), Ljubljana

Nebotičnik (The Skyscraper) is one of Slovenia’s best-known early modern buildings and an important landmark of 20th-century architecture. Completed in 1933, it was designed by architect Vladimir Šubic and, at 70.35 metres, ranked among the tallest buildings in Europe at the time. Its reinforced concrete structure represented advanced engineering for the period, while the design combined functional modernism with Art Deco influences. The building was planned as a multifunctional complex, bringing together shops, offices, apartments, and public spaces under one roof.

The lower floors continue to house businesses and services, while the upper levels lead to one of the building’s main attractions: the café, restaurant, and open-air viewing terrace. From here, visitors can enjoy wide views across the rooftops, nearby hills, and, on clear days, the distant Julian Alps. Original marble, metalwork, and the grand staircase reflect its 1930s design, while its fast lift once symbolised modern progress.

Nebotičnik has remained an important part of everyday life for decades, serving residents as well as visitors. It survived the political changes of the 20th century while retaining its original purpose as a lively mixed-use building. Whether stopping for a coffee, a meal, or panoramic views, visitors can experience a place that reflects both the architectural ambitions and the social history of interwar Slovenia.
