First and Summerfield United Methodist Church, New Haven
Standing just beyond the northwest corner of the New Haven Green, First and Summerfield United Methodist Church is a striking landmark, housed in a historic brick building adorned with tall white Ionic columns, a grand staircase entrance, stained glass windows, and a soaring steeple. This prominent site has long been a hub for worship, community, and justice in downtown New Haven.
Originally constructed in 1849 as the First Methodist Church, the building was designed by noted architect Henry Austin in the Federal style, linking it aesthetically to the nearby Center Church (1814). Over the years, many of the original architectural features were altered or removed. Following a devastating fire in 1904, the church underwent a significant renovation under architect Charles C. Haight, who redesigned the entrance and added the current steeple in a Federal Revival style.
In 1981, the First Methodist Church merged with the Summerfield United Methodist Church-formerly located in the Newhallville neighborhood-forming the unified First and Summerfield United Methodist Church. Since then, the congregation has continued to grow as a welcoming and inclusive faith community.
Committed to justice, hope, and spiritual growth, the church strives to serve all people, regardless of background or identity. Through prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and action, it seeks to nurture faith and encourage a deeper relationship with Christ and with one another.
Whether you're seeking a place of reflection, community, or spiritual transformation, First and Summerfield invites you to join in the journey.
