Floibanen Funicular, Bergen (must see)

The Fløibanen funicular has been carrying passengers from the center of Bergen up Mount Fløyen since 1918. At the upper station, 320 meters above sea level, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views over Bergen, the surrounding mountains, and the fjord. From the upper station, gravel roads and forest paths lead to viewpoints, lakes, and neighboring peaks. Many paths are suitable for strollers, while the walk around Lake Skomakerdiket is also accessible to wheelchairs.

For more experienced hikers, the famous Vidden trail crosses the high ground between Fløyen and Mount Ulriken. It can be walked in either direction, although the Ulriken-to-Fløyen route is particularly popular. The full crossing takes roughly five to six hours and passes over exposed mountain terrain, so suitable footwear, clothing, food, and water are important.

Hikers do not have to go hungry. Close to the upper station is Fløistuen Café, serving coffee, hot chocolate, baked goods, focaccia, and ice cream. For something more substantial, nearby Fløirestauranten, which has welcomed guests since 1925, serves meals with sweeping views over Bergen. Fløistuen Shop, meanwhile, is primarily a shop selling locally made products rather than the food outlet described in the original text.

About a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from the station lies Lake Skomakerdiket, reached along a gravel path of about 400 meters. Beside the water is Skomakerstuen Café, where visitors can enjoy hot and cold drinks, light snacks, and freshly made svele-soft Norwegian griddle cakes served with toppings such as sour cream, jam, brown cheese, or sugar. The café normally opens on weekends and holidays rather than every day.

Fløyen is also well equipped for families. Near the upper station is a large playground with slides, climbing structures, swings, and play areas. Beyond it lies the Troll Forest, filled with whimsical troll figures and small challenges, while the nature playground at Fløysletten includes an obstacle course, a small zipline, and a climbing tower more than ten meters high. During the summer, free canoeing is offered on Lake Skomakerdiket, generally from late June until the end of August.
