Fonte Gaia (Joyful Fountain), Siena (must see)

Located on the upper side of Campo Square, opposite the Public Palace, the Gaia Fountain is one of Siena’s most beloved civic monuments. Now protected by a low fence, it stands on the site of an earlier fountain completed in 1343, when water first reached the square through Siena’s remarkable underground network of channels known as the bottini.

For a hilltop city, securing a reliable water supply was a major achievement. According to tradition, the arrival of water was greeted with great celebration, giving the fountain its name “Joyful Fountain.”

The present fountain was completed in 1419. It consists of a rectangular basin enclosed on three sides by a high marble parapet. The surface was richly decorated with bas-reliefs depicting biblical scenes, including the Creation of Adam and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Along the central section, the Virgin and Child appeared surrounded by allegorical figures representing the virtues.

Centuries of exposure gradually damaged the original carvings. During the 19th century, the sculptor Tito Sarrocchi created the copies now seen in the square, while the surviving originals were removed for preservation and are displayed across the plaza inside the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex.
