Fortifications of Mdina, Mdina

The fortifications of Mdina bear witness to the city’s long history and strategic importance. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC as Maleth and later known as Melite during the Roman period, Mdina was protected by defensive walls from its early days. Over the centuries, the city passed under the control of various powers, resulting in repeated modifications and reconstructions of its defences.

During the Byzantine period, Mdina’s fortifications were strengthened in recognition of the city’s strategic value. The Arabs, who took control of Malta in the 9th century, substantially reshaped and fortified the settlement. Further alterations followed during the medieval period under successive rulers associated with the Kingdom of Sicily.

Many of the substantial and well-preserved fortifications visible today were developed or extensively modified under the Order of Saint John between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Knights Hospitaller invested considerably in strengthening Mdina’s defences, reinforcing its walls and bastions and improving its fortified entrances.

Mdina witnessed periods of conflict and political upheaval throughout its long history, yet its formidable defences helped preserve its role as one of Malta’s principal fortified settlements. Although sections were altered or rebuilt over the centuries, the city’s walls remain remarkably intact, making them one of the finest surviving examples of historic fortifications in Malta.

Mdina’s remarkable history and architectural heritage have also earned it international recognition. Since 1998, the fortified city has been included on Malta’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage status.
