Greeks Gate, Mdina

Greeks Gate is a fascinating historic landmark and one of the surviving entrances into the fortified city of Mdina. Originally built during the medieval period, the gate has witnessed centuries of change and modification while preserving important traces of the city’s earlier defences.

In medieval times, Greeks Gate was flanked by a formidable D-shaped wall tower and served as one of the principal entrances into Mdina. Its defensive design reflected the city’s strategic importance and the need to protect access through its fortified walls. Over the centuries, the gate underwent several modifications, the most significant of which came in 1724, when military engineer and architect Charles François de Mondion added an elegant Baroque portal, giving the entrance much of its present-day appearance.

Despite these later alterations, the rear section of Greeks Gate still retains elements of its original medieval form, providing a rare glimpse into Mdina’s earlier fortifications. One unusual aspect of the gate’s history concerns the movement of enslaved people into Mdina. During the rule of the Order of Saint John, Greeks Gate was reportedly the only entrance through which enslaved people were permitted to enter the city.

In recognition of its considerable architectural and historical importance, Greeks Gate was included in Malta’s Antiquities List of 1925, helping to ensure the preservation of this remarkable piece of Mdina’s defensive heritage.
