Presernov Trg (Preseren Square), Ljubljana

Presernov Trg (Preseren Square), Ljubljana (must see)

Preseren Square is the central public square and one of the main meeting places in Ljubljana. It developed during the 17th century in front of the medieval city gate and became the city's principal square after the 1895 earthquake, when many surrounding buildings were rebuilt in the elegant Secession style. Named after the national poet France Preseren, the square's eastern side features his 1905 monument, positioned to gaze across the plaza toward Wolf Street, where a relief of his unrequited love, Julija Primic, is carved into a building façade. Follow the bronze poet's gaze until it lands on a building with a yellow façade, where you will find the relief of Julija Primic between two windows on the second level.

The square is surrounded by historic architecture that reflects different periods of the city’s development. Its most prominent building is the pink-coloured Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, completed in the 17th century and known for its early Baroque design and richly decorated interior. The church anchors the square’s northern perimeter. Face the church and look
slightly to its east to find the gold-hued Urbanc Palace. It is the building with the year “1903” engraved on its upper level.

For the final highlight, step over to the square's northwestern side, near Čopova Street. Here, you can inspect the 3D tactile bronze model of Ljubljana, which offers a bird's-eye view of the streets and rivers winding around Castle Hill.

Throughout the year, Preseren Square serves as a lively gathering place for residents and visitors. Street musicians, festivals, public celebrations, and seasonal markets regularly fill the open space, while nearby cafés provide views of the surrounding architecture and river. In December, festive lights and a large Christmas tree fill the square, while the nearby bronze model shows the layout of the historic centre.
