Hauptmann House, Ljubljana

Hauptmann House, Ljubljana

Constructed in 1873, this building stood resilient during the devastating earthquake of 1895, emerging almost unscathed. Following the big shake, it came under the ownership of local paint merchant Adolf Hauptmann, who enlisted architect Ciril Metod Koch to revamp the facade and roof, aligning them with the trendy Viennese Secession style of the era.

The five-story corner structure received a striking facade adorned with a geometric pattern of vibrant ceramic tiles in green, blue, and red hues, along with a projecting roof. Additionally, captivating cursive geometric sculptures were affixed to the building's corners on the first floor.

Altogether, Hauptmann House stands as a fitting companion to the other ornate structures on Prešeren Square.
