Ichiba-Dori Shopping Street, Yokohama

Ichiba-Dori Shopping Street is one of the primary streets in Yokohama Chinatown, running north to south between Chukagai Odori and Kanteibyo Road. Its name includes ichiba, meaning “market,” and the street is easy to locate thanks to the traditional gates standing at each end.

The street was established in the 1920s, when food stores began opening here to supply Chinatown’s restaurants with produce, fish, meat, tofu, and other ingredients. That practical market role helped support the neighbourhood’s growing dining culture. Today, Ichiba-Dori still keeps traces of that food-street character, but it has become a lively pedestrian area with much more than grocers and butchers.

Visitors will find full-service restaurants, casual eateries, street food stations, and shops selling souvenirs and specialty goods. It is a good place to grab Chinese dumplings while walking, sample sweets or steamed buns, or sit down for a multi-course meal. In keeping with Chinatown’s colourful character, the street also has palm readers offering fortune-telling for a fee.

The appeal of Ichiba-Dori lies in its compact scale and everyday atmosphere: narrow lanes, bright shopfronts, the smell of cooking, and Chinese paper lanterns hanging overhead. At night, the lanterns illuminate the street, creating a warm, welcoming mood that recalls the busy food streets of Hong Kong and Shanghai.
