International Mask and Puppet Museum, Syracuse

The International Mask and Puppet Museum in Syracuse is a captivating destination for anyone interested in the art of puppetry and masks. Originally built in 1890 by Charles L. Hoffman as a private home, the building has served various purposes over the years, from a Union Hall to a church, before being purchased by the Open Hand Theater and transformed into the museum it is today. Operated by the Open Hand Theater, which is renowned for its imaginative puppet and mask-based productions, the museum goes beyond typical costume masks and children's puppets. It features artifacts used in cultural rituals, ceremonies, and artistic performances, offering a fascinating look into the traditions of several regions. Exhibits are constantly changing, with past displays including exotic South Asian masks used in black magic rituals, intricately crafted Balinese and African masks, and Mexican “Day of the Dead” artifacts, among others.
