Jagannath Temple, Hyderabad

The Jagannath Temple, opened in March 2009, is a place of worship inspired by the famous Puri Jagannath Temple. Its idea was first proposed in 1992 by a group of Odia devotees, and construction began in 2004 after years of rituals and planning. The temple follows principles of sanctity, equality, discipline, and cleanliness, creating a calm setting for prayer and reflection.

The temple is built from about 600 tonnes of red sandstone brought from Odisha, giving it its distinct color. Around 60 skilled Odia stone carvers worked on-site to create the detailed sculptures and carvings. The main structure includes the Garbha Gruha, Jagan Mohan, dancing hall, and offering area, while smaller shrines are dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Anjaneya Swamy, Maa Vimala, Maa Laxmi, Lord Shiva, and Nabagrah.

The main idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are carved from sacred neem wood sourced from Odisha, while the subsidiary deities are made of stone. The 70-foot central shikhara is designed as a smaller homage to the towering spire of Puri. Boundary wall murals show stories from the Puri temple, the Dashavatar, and divine myths, and the evening lighting, along with the “Chakadola” light and sound show, adds a modern cultural layer.
