JORVIK Viking Centre, York (must see)

JORVIK Viking Centre is one of York’s most important attractions for understanding the city’s Viking past. Located in the Coppergate area, the centre stands above the site of a remarkable archaeological excavation that transformed historians’ understanding of Viking York.

The Vikings captured York in 866 AD and settled the area until William the Conqueror’s invasion in 1066. In 1972, an archaeological excavation at Coppergate revealed up to nine metres (or 29 feet) of preserved layers. Over the following five years, archaeologists uncovered more than 40,000 objects, providing an extraordinary insight into everyday life in York.

The discoveries included timber from buildings, pottery, metalworking slag, and Roman and medieval roof tiles reused by the Vikings. Together, these finds have helped archaeologists reconstruct the layout of the settlement and understand what its inhabitants ate, made and traded. The evidence shows that Viking York was a busy international trading centre, inhabited by craftsmen, merchants, settlers and people from different parts of the Viking world and beyond.

The JORVIK Viking Centre opened in 1984, transforming the archaeological discoveries into an immersive visitor experience. Visitors travel through a recreated Viking city in a time-capsule ride, journeying 1,000 years into the past. Along the way, they encounter animatronic Vikings, traders, Anglo-Saxons and settlers from Ireland, giving a vivid impression of life in York.

After the ride, visitors can see some of the 1,000-year-old artefacts uncovered during the excavation up close, including jewellery, padlocks and remarkably preserved clothing such as socks.
