Lower San Miguel Square and Church, Granada

Lower San Miguel Square is a small open space in the Albaicín, surrounded by traditional houses and cafés and centered on the Church of Lower San Miguel. The name distinguishes it from nearby Upper San Miguel, the church farther up the hill.

The church and square reveal several layers of Granada’s history. The church was built in the Mudejar style, combining Christian architecture with Islamic influences, and later acquired Renaissance features. Beside it stands a red-brick fountain and a surviving water cistern associated with the earlier mosque that occupied the site. Two marble columns, believed to date from the Roman imperial period, suggest that the location has an even older history. A statue of Christ on the cross, secured with iron clamps, bears the scars of Granada’s turbulent 20th century.

The church has a single nave, side chapels, a main chapel, and a choir. Its entrance is framed by Corinthian columns and pilasters bearing shields, with an image of Saint Michael above the doors. The western portal features Saint Peter in a similar arrangement. The interior was altered several times, including the installation of a new altar in the 18th century.

At the end of your visit, take a seat at one of the square's outdoor café terraces. While its historic bell tower—which mirrors the layout of the original Moorish minaret—remains closed to climbing, the view from the cobblestone plaza offers a beautiful look at the whitewashed facades of the Albaicín and the neighboring Convent of Santa Isabel la Real.
