San Jose Church, Granada

The Church of San José is one of the Albayzín’s best examples of how Christian Granada reused the buildings and spaces of the former Muslim city. Built in 1517 on the site of the former Mosque of the Hermits, it was designed by Rodrigo Hernández in the Gothic ojival style. Its tower is believed to have originally been the mosque’s minaret, while a Moorish-era water deposit can still be seen at its foot. Together with nearby Lower San Miguel and Santa Isabel la Real, the church vividly illustrates the transition from Muslim to Christian Granada.

After passing through the church’s elegant Neoclassical main portal on San José Street, visitors enter an interior filled with the gilded decoration typical of churches built following the return of Christianity to Andalucía. The central nave is supported by four arches bearing the coats of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. At the altar, a large Neoclassical entablature designed by Ventura Rodríguez rests on Corinthian columns and frames a sculpture of Saint Joseph, while a dramatic sculpture of Christ Crucified in the style of Pablo de Rojas crowns the upper vault. Religious paintings and sculptures are displayed throughout the church.

San José is worth visiting less for monumental grandeur than for what it reveals about Granada’s transformation after 1492. Its reused minaret and Moorish water infrastructure provide a tangible connection to the Islamic city, while its Christian decoration and religious art reflect the new order. Here, the architectural layers of Granada’s history can be seen particularly clearly.
