Lucca's City Walls (The Lucca Ramparts), Lucca (must see)

One of the first things you’ll notice approaching Lucca’s historic center is its impressive city walls. The walls completely encircle the old town, and to enter it, you’ll need to pass through one of the gateways. These include Porta Elisa, Porta San Donato, Porta San Jacopo, Porta Santa Maria, Porta Vittorio Emanuele, and Porta San Pietro.

Stretching for about two and a half miles, or nearly four kilometers, the walls are among the best-preserved Renaissance fortifications in Italy. But these aren't Lucca's first defenses. The city has actually had three successive sets of walls. The earliest were built by the Romans and remained in use up until 1000 AD. As Lucca expanded, a second set of walls was constructed during medieval times. The last set of walls was built mainly between the 16th and 17th centuries.

This final defensive system was designed to protect Lucca from potential attacks, particularly from its powerful neighbors, such as Florence, ruled by the Medici family. Although the walls were never seriously tested in battle, they became a powerful symbol of the city's determination to remain independent.

When Lucca became part of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy in 1860, defensive walls were no longer practically useful. Still, rather than demolishing them, the city chose to preserve them. Today, they remain one of Lucca's defining landmarks and a lasting reminder of its independent past.
