The Church of San Girolamo, Lucca
Nestled in the historic heart of Lucca, the Church of San Girolamo stands as a testament to the city's layered past. Built in the mid-fifteenth century, it was originally intended for the Jesuit order. The church’s façade features a polychrome terracotta lunette, an early sixteenth-century depiction of the Madonna and Child, flanked by Saints Peter and Jerome, adding a vibrant artistic touch to the entrance.
Once, a loggia graced the front of the building, but urban restructuring in the early nineteenth century led to its demolition, leaving behind only two corbels as silent witnesses of its former grandeur. Inside, little remains of the original medieval design, as an eighteenth-century renovation completely reshaped its interior.
No longer serving as a place of worship, San Girolamo has found a new role in Lucca’s cultural scene. Now functioning as an auditorium (Teatro di San Girolamo), it is annexed to the Teatro del Giglio, offering a space where history and the performing arts intertwine.

Lucca's City Wall and Gates
As one of Italy's Città d'arte's (arts towns), Lucca is famous, among other things, for its well-preserved ancient walls encircling the historic center. From about 570 AD until 1847 the city had been the center of the Longobard administration and the capital of old Tuscany, and as such required a defense system to render it an impenetrable fortress.
