Maison Tavel (Tavel House), Geneva

Maison Tavel (Tavel House), Geneva

If Geneva had a family photo album carved in stone, Maison Tavel would be one of its oldest surviving portraits. Built in the 12th century by the noble Tavel family, this historic residence has watched Geneva grow from a fortified medieval settlement into an international city.

A devastating fire swept through the area in 1334, but the house rose again, rebuilt with the appearance of an urban palace rather than a simple family home. Over the centuries, it passed between influential Genevan families before eventually landing in the hands of the city itself in 1963. After a careful restoration, it reopened in 1986 as a museum dedicated to Geneva’s history — proof that some old houses simply refuse to retire...

Inside, the museum spreads across six floors and even dips underground, turning a visit into a vertical time machine. The collections focus heavily on medieval Geneva, with artifacts, furniture, and everyday objects revealing how people once lived, worked, traded, and defended the city.

Outside, a row of imposing cannons reminds visitors that Geneva’s past was not always peaceful. The real showpiece waits upstairs: a giant 3D model of Geneva paired with a multimedia presentation called “Geneva, history made-to-measure.” It traces the city’s evolution from its earliest days to the present, complete with narration in English, French, and German — because history sounds better when it comes with options...

Even the practical details come with personality. The basement cloakroom feels more like a stone cave than a modern facility, and nearby, you’ll find displays of historic weights, measurements, and a massive 6,300-litre wooden barrel that makes today’s wine rack look embarrassingly small. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building, which means you can stand inside a medieval house while checking messages from the 21st century — a fitting contrast in a place where centuries comfortably share the same roof.
