Maschpark, Hanover

Maschpark, Hanover

Maschpark, located in Hanover's central district, covers 10 hectares just south of the old town. Established around 1900, it holds the distinction of being Hanover's first city park. Its design, largely unchanged since inception, showcases the quintessential German garden style of the late 19th century.

The park's layout is triangular, with Friedrichswall bordering the north, Willy-Brandt-Allee to the east, and Culemannstrasse and the Leine to the west and south. Its northern section features notable structures such as the New Town Hall, Trammplatz, August Kestner Museum, and the city’s building authority. Nearby, the Sprengel Museum and the Lower Saxony State Museum are easily visible. To the south, the park blends into the lush Leineaue and Maschsee.

The area now known as Maschpark was historically a floodplain for the Leine and Ihme rivers. It was transformed into a park starting in 1899, with the New Town Hall as its centerpiece. The park was completed in 1913, featuring a stone relief by Georg Herting in honor of Julius Trip, the garden artist who designed it.

The park's gardens now host a diverse array of plants, resembling a botanical garden with seasonal blooms. There are sections of evergreens like rhododendrons and conifers, and exotic botanicals including magnolias and tulip trees. Notably, large trees like American red oak and silver maple are strategically planted. At the park’s heart is the Maschteich, a 2.6-hectare pond created in 1900, featuring a water lily bay and a rocky peninsula artistically crafted with tuff blocks, representing a miniature alpine landscape.
