Sprengel Museum, Hanover

Sprengel Museum, Hanover

The Sprengel Museum, established in 1979, is one of the leading cultural institutions in Hannover. Renowned for its diverse array of both permanent and temporary exhibitions, it holds a prominent position among the world's foremost museums specializing in 20th and 21st-century art. Initially, the museum's inception was rooted in the private collection of Dr. Bernhard Sprengel, a passionate collector of German expressionism and French modern art. Over time, the museum has expanded its holdings to encompass significant works from various periods of contemporary art.

The institution hosts more than 25 exhibitions annually, in addition to its permanent collection. It also serves as a venue for symposiums, lectures, and workshops, making it a place that encourages active engagement rather than passive observation. Notable pieces within the museum's permanent collection include works by iconic artists such as Pablo Picasso, representing the realm of cubism, and Henri Laurens. German artists are also well-represented, with an impressive selection of surrealist art by Max Ernst, as well as a tribute to the vibrant art scene that emerged in Hannover during the 1920s and the abstract expressionism movement of the 1950s. Furthermore, the museum places a significant emphasis on photography and new media, offering a substantial collection in these areas.

Why You Should Visit:
