Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps, St. Petersburg

The Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps is one of Russia’s oldest military museums. Its history begins on August 29, 1703, when Peter the Great ordered an arsenal at the Peter and Paul Fortress for preserving significant Russian and captured artillery pieces. The collection later expanded to cover artillery, military engineering, communications, weapons, uniforms, and military history from the medieval period onward.

The museum occupies the massive Kronverk Arsenal, a horseshoe-shaped military building constructed between 1849 and 1860. Historical collections began moving into the arsenal in 1868. Today, the main exhibition occupies 13 halls covering more than 17,000 square meters. Displays include artillery and ammunition, firearms and edged weapons, engineering equipment, communications technology, battle flags, uniforms, medals, paintings, documents, and other historical objects. The galleries trace changes in weapons and military organization across several centuries. An extensive open-air exhibition occupies more than two hectares of the Kronverk courtyard. It contains around 250 pieces of military equipment, including field and anti-aircraft artillery, self-propelled guns, missile systems, engineering machinery, and communications equipment. Both Russian and foreign weapons are represented, ranging from historical artillery to modern systems.

Full-size weapons displayed alongside uniforms, documents, artworks, and technical equipment allow visitors to examine the development of military technology in detail. The nineteenth-century arsenal provides an additional historical setting directly connected with the storage and handling of military equipment.
