Moti Mahal, Lucknow

Moti Mahal, meaning “Pearl Palace,” is a Nawabi-era palace associated with Saadat Ali Khan, who ruled Awadh from 1798 to 1814. Built near the Gomti River, it served as a royal leisure residence and formed part of a larger palace group that included Shah Manzil and Mubarak Manzil. Its name is commonly linked to the pale, pearl-like appearance of the building.

The palace was designed to make use of its riverside setting. Members of the royal household reportedly watched birds in flight and animal combats held near the river from the palace. Some accounts also suggest that its elevated position allowed the rulers to observe activity in the surrounding area. These details reflect the recreational traditions of the Awadh court as well as the importance of carefully positioned palace buildings.

Architecturally, Moti Mahal is more restrained than many of the region’s heavily decorated monuments, with a light-coloured façade, arched openings and a central domed element. Broad lawns surround the surviving structure, and the grounds are also used for exhibitions and public or private events. The open grounds preserve the spacious feel of the former Nawabi riverside complex.
