Mushir Zadi Tomb, Lucknow

Mushir Zadi Tomb, Lucknow

Within the historic Kaiser Bagh Palace complex, the Mushir Zadi Tomb is a tribute to Awadhi grandeur and loyalty. Commissioned by King Ghazi‑ud‑Din Haidar, who became ruler of Oudh in 1814, the mausoleum honors his beloved mother, Mushir Zadi-wife of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan.

The elegant structure is square in plan with four octagonal corner towers crowned by pillared kiosks and topped with smaller domes, culminating in a soaring central dome. Each face features three arched windows, with additional side openings beyond the pillars. Stucco moldings and floral motifs decorate the façade-intricate details that capture the artistry of early 19th‑century craftsmanship. An underground vault holds the grave of Mushir Zadi and reportedly that of one of her daughters.

Though interior access may be restricted, visitors are often entranced by the tomb's symmetry and elaborate exterior from the grounds. The site is best appreciated during early morning or late afternoon light, which brings out the warm tones of the brick and plaster.
