Musée Océanographique, Tunis
Situated in Carthage on the site of its former Punic port, the Oceanographic Museum (Musée Océanographique) is Tunisia's primary museum dedicated to the sea. Originally established in 1924 as the Salammbô Oceanographic Station and affiliated with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, it gained its independence in 1956 and became the National Scientific and Technical Institute for Oceanography and Fisheries (INSTOP), later renamed the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies (INSTM) in 1992.
The museum's building boasts a blend of Art Deco and local architecture, with an impressive nine-meter by fifteen-meter atrium as the centerpiece. Its collections are presented in eleven rooms, designed as an educational space and covering various topics, including Tunisia's sea country, freshwater aquariums, Tunisian lagoons, bird communities, islands, and protected areas, as well as exhibits on eel migrations, fishing techniques, and saltwater aquariums.
For anyone interested in marine life, the Oceanographic Museum is a must-visit, with its unique exhibits and impressive atrium. The museum is open every day of the week except Monday, with varying winter and summer hours.
