Museum of Military History, Vienna
The Museum of Military History in Vienna, known as the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum – Militärhistorisches Institut in German, stands as the primary institution dedicated to showcasing the history of the Austrian Armed Forces. Its extensive collection encompasses a wide array of artifacts, including weapons, armor, tanks, aircraft, uniforms, flags, paintings, medals, photographs, models of battleships, and historical documents. While the museum falls under federal ownership, it operates independently from other federal museums, directly reporting to the Ministry of Defence and Sports.
The museum's historical collections date back to the 17th century when they began in Vienna's old Imperial Army armory. By the 18th century, these collections were widely admired. The museum explores Habsburg Monarchy and Austria's history from the late 16th century to 1945. It also features special exhibitions on contemporary themes. Notable displays include a tank collection with items like the Kürassier tank destroyer and M109 self-propelled howitzer, some relevant today. The exhibits cover the events leading to wars, including the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Chotek were assassinated in 1914.
The museum welcomes visitors daily from 9 am to 5 pm, with exceptions on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, May 1st, All Saints' Day, December 25th, and December 31st. On the first Sunday of each month and on Austrian National Day (October 26th), admission is free of charge. Additionally, guided tours on various historical eras and topics are offered every Sunday and holiday by museum staff. The museum's educational team plays a crucial role, providing a diverse program for children and school groups. Furthermore, arrangements can be made for children's birthday parties and other special events.
