Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO), Geneva

Since its inception in 1994, Geneva's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Musée d’art moderne et contemporain - MAMCO) has been pioneering a unique approach to museum display and curation. Focusing primarily on art from the 1960s onwards, MAMCO operates on several guiding principles: it views the museum as a comprehensive exhibit, seamlessly integrating temporary exhibitions with dynamic presentations of its permanent collection; it utilizes diverse space and display types to reflect the evolution of museum environments, ranging from a collector's personal space to minimalistic 'white cube' galleries and artist studios; it houses a special segment dedicated to artists' spaces; and it consistently engages with both the local Genevan and broader Swiss art communities. MAMCO, committed to contemporary art, centers artists and their work in its mission, aiming to be accessible to all audiences. It orchestrates historical narratives through various exhibitions centered on a primary theme, updated thrice annually.

Housed in a repurposed factory acquired by the City of Geneva, MAMCO's facilities span 3,500 square meters, making it the largest contemporary art museum in Switzerland. The industrial building also hosts the Centre d’Art Contemporain and other entities, each with their independent exhibition agendas. MAMCO manages an extensive collection of over 3,500 artworks and, through its academic endeavors, has established a specialized documentation and archives center available by appointment, alongside diverse educational programs catering to both adults and children.
