Promenade des Bastions (Bastions Park), Geneva
Bastions Park, centrally located, is the city's largest and most historic park. Renowned for its grandeur and activity, it hosts notable events like the Course de l'Escalade and National Day celebrations.
The park's inception dates back to the aftermath of the 1720 plague in southern France. Geneva's government established this garden and walking area at la Treille's base, offering residents a breath of fresh air within the city's fortifications. Initially dubbed the "Belle promenade," it became a hub for leisurely strolls, combining socializing with outdoor enjoyment. In 1817, it became the site of Geneva's first official Botanical Garden, thanks to Augustin Pyrame de Candolle.
Post-1849, following the demolition of city fortifications, the park expanded and transformed into a landscaped haven. Since 1872, it has been home to the University of Geneva. The Reformation Wall, a significant city landmark, was erected here in 1917. A major renovation in 2017 refreshed the central promenade, introducing a clay-limestone path that enhanced the park's natural ambiance.
The park features over 140 trees, each marked with a plaque identifying its species. With more than 200 varieties, it's like a global botanical tour, showcasing species from Japanese maples to European larch.
The park also boasts giant chess boards, including a colorful, mixed-use chessboard. Its life-size chess sets are a hidden gem in Geneva, attracting chess enthusiasts of all backgrounds. Additionally, it houses significant historical monuments like the Reformers’ Wall, the Palais Eynard, and the University and Library of Geneva. With its romantic, chestnut tree-lined promenade and historical richness, Bastions Park is a cherished spot for many, particularly couples.
